Sean McKelvie was born and raised in Salt Lake City, UT. From an early age, it was very apparent that he had an extreme enthusiasm of the outdoors, often sleeping in a tent in the backyard, or in an igloo if there was enough snow to build one. Sean could often be found exploring the vast fields and open spaces that surrounded his family home, or riding his bike on the dirt paths and bike trails with his friends.
Throughout his youth, Sean and his family would go on weekend adventures to the Uintah Mountains where he would hike, fly fish, backpack, camp, and learn to recognize types of trees and animals. Other family vacations, and subsequent trips with friends, into the vast Utah deserts further increased Sean’s passion for the outdoors and led him to create programs targeted toward youth to pass on his passion and knowledge.
Over the last decade, Sean has traveled from the high Rocky Mountains, where he hiked mountain peaks over 14,000 feet, to the jungle forests of Costa Rica, where he hiked and zip-lined through dense jungles and over 5,000 foot ravines. Through all his travels, Sean has realized that the best education is experience, and all the best experiences happen outside!
As an educator, Sean has often found ways to take his classroom into the outdoors. Throughout his teaching career, Sean has taken students snowshoeing, hiking, camping, climbing, and river rafting. TreeHab is the culmination of a life-long pursuit of being in the outdoors, and a passion and love of teaching youth.
